How to Talk About Suicide Risk With Patients and Their Families
After using an evidence-based tool to screen for suicide risk and conduct a brief safety assessment, pediatric health clinicians can ask subsequent questions that build an understanding of what suicidal thoughts are like for each individual person. The AAP offers pediatricians resources on types of questions to ask that strengthen connection with patients and families and build understanding of their experiences, which may make it easier to communicate and work together on any necessary follow-up care.
