AAP Announces new Guidance on the Application of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in the Pediatric Medical Setting
Posted on December 09, 2024
The AAP is excited to introduce Guidance on the Application of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in the Pediatric Medical Setting, an effective tool now available to stop the progression of untreated tooth decay in patients through age 5.
Since the AAP Section on Oral Health (SOOH) began oral health integration in 2000, pediatricians have been able to provide preventive care by performing oral health risk assessments and applying fluoride varnish. Now you can actually treat decay with SDF, a caries-arresting liquid medication that is easily and quickly applied to affected teeth, buying precious time until referral to professional dental care can be achieved.
The AAP Guidance provides the context you need Before You Begin, includes important measures for Partnering with Families, shares logistics for Preparing Your Practice, and demonstrates the steps for Applying SDF. We suggest a variety of Oral Health Education Resources for Health Professionals. (Keep an eye out for a new online module on SDF from Smiles for Life, coming soon!)
