Advancing Diagnosis and Management of Atopic Dermatitis in Children and Adolescents

• Anthony J. Mancini, MD, FAAP, FAAD Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago
  

  Anthony J. Mancini, MD is Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Head of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where he directs the division’s pediatric dermatology fellowship training program. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of pediatrics.

  Dr. Mancini’s clinical and research interests include infantile hemangiomas, atopic dermatitis, exanthems of childhood, and neonatal skin maturation and skin disorders. He has published 215 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, books and book chapters. He is co-author of Hurwitz Clinical Pediatric Dermatology (3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and upcoming 6^th editions), co-editor of the AAP publication Pediatric Dermatology – A Quick Reference Guide (1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd editions), and Pediatric Section Editor of Dermatology (1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd editions). Dr. Mancini is the Past President of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, where he also served for 10 years as Secretary-Treasurer, and past Chair of the 2017 World Congress of Pediatric Dermatology. He has previously served on the AAP Executive Committee of the Section on Dermatology, the AAP Super CME Planning Group, and the AAP Pedia Link Pediatric Dermatology Project Team, and is an author of the upcoming AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines on Infantile Hemangiomas.

  Marc Minkler is the Maine State EMS for Children Program Manager. He is a paramedic, EMS educator and consultant who has partnered with fire departments, EMS services and hospitals to improve their clinical care, medical knowledge, and operations and holds degrees in Business Administration and Healthcare Administration. After spending over three decades working in EMS, as a clinician, educator, training director, citywide EMS supervisor, regional EMS director and chief of a large EMS service, Marc knows what truly drives EMS systems and the partnerships between EMS, hospitals and long-term care—and it’s not mastering the golden hour. It’s how well you connect with the people you’re trying to help and provide professional evidence-based care.

  Marc has utilized his skills throughout Vermont, Maryland, and Maine, as well as teaching in numerous other states and has been published in multiple magazines, electronic and print publications. He is a member of the Maine State EMS Education Committee, EMS Quality Improvement Committee, and Maine State Trauma Advisory Committee and the board of advisors for the Sanford Regional Technical School’s EMS program and is a member of NASEMSO, NAEMT and NAEMSE.

  Kent Hunter is a Vaccines Medical Director in the Medical Affairs Division of Pfizer. Kent joined Pfizer in October of 2000 and worked as a Medical Outcomes Specialist in Pfizer’s Primary Care division until transitioning to Pfizer Vaccines in 2015.

  Kent received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and earned his PharmD degree from the University Of Florida’s College Of Pharmacy.

  Kent also serves as an adjunct professor, preceptor, and mentor for the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and as an adjunct professor at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy.

Adolescents and Psychoactive Substances: New Challenges for Pediatricians

• John Rogers Knight, Jr., MD Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School
  

  Dr. John Knight, Founder/Director, Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research, Children's Hospital, Boston & Associate Professsor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School John Knight received his MD degree from University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital and a postgraduate fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital. He has served as a consultant to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy.

  Dr. Knight's research is directed at developing an effective brief intervention for drug abuse that could be widely implemented in settings where adolescents receive routine healthcare. The long-term goal of Dr. Knight and his colleagues at the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research (CeASAR) is to improve screening and intervention for adolescent substance abuse in medical office settings.

  Greg Marley is the Clinical Director of NAMI Maine, and a licensed clinical social worker. He has practiced in the field of community mental health and prevention in Maine for over 25 years.

• Robyn Ostrander, MD MaineHealth
  

  Dr. Ostrander is a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at MaineHealth. Her approach to children and families is that the brain is an organ, and needs medical attention sometimes just like the rest of the body. She tries to be a tour guide as much as a physician, explaining how the mental health system works and supporting getting the right diagnosis and proper treatment fast, so that kids can get back to being kids.

• Alane O'Connor, DNP Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency Program, MaineGeneral Medical Center
  

  Dr. O’Connor's clinical work focuses on addiction medicine and the management of opioid use disorders using buprenorphine. She developed an integrated medical and behavioral health treatment program that has served hundreds of opioid dependent pregnant women over the past ten years. Dr. O’Connor has published her ground breaking research on infant outcomes following exposure to buprenorphine during pregnancy in many journals including the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, the Journal of Perinatal Medicine, European Addiction Research, the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

  Emily Moores is the Tobacco Prevention and Control Manager at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In this position, she provides leadership for the implementation of the US CDC National Tobacco Control Programs through Maine’s public health infrastructure. This includes grant writing and implementation as well as program development and implementation. She manages multiple workgroups to address Maine specific topics of interest including e-cigarette use. Emily is responsible for implementing the goals of the National Tobacco Control Program which are to prevent initiation among youth and young adults, promote cessation among adults and youth, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke and identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities.

Keynote Speaker

• Joseph V. Sakran, MD, MPH, MPA, FACS Johns Hopkins Hospital
  

  Dr. Sakran is an assistant professor of surgery, director of emergency general surgery, and associate Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. After a comprehensive general surgery training at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Joe completed his fellowship in traumatology, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His past experience is in resource-poor settings, working with underprivileged and minority high school students, and has a public health background that has provided him with the skill-set needed to take on the challenges of improving care among vulnerable populations both domestically and abroad.

  As a former victim of gun violence, Joe spends a significant portion of his time as a clinician, researcher, and advocate with a primary goal of reducing firearm death and disability in America. To this end, he recently founded the organization @ThisIsOurLane, a platform to help unite healthcare providers and deliver one strong voice in ending gun violence. Dr. Sakran completed a one-year educational sabbatical at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where he developed a unique skill set within public policy, economics, and leadership development. During the most recent Presidential Campaign, he founded Doctors for Hillary, bringing to the forefront through a grassroots effort healthcare issues important to Americans all across this country. He was recognized by Secretary Clinton for his work and advocacy specifically on Gun Violence. In 2017, Joe was selected by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of Healthcare’s Leaders under 40. He has testified in front of Congress and is a sought after national and international speaker, and holds numerous national roles in surgical organizations most recently serving as Chair of the Resident and Associate Society for the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He currently serves on the Young Fellows Association Governing Council, and is the Vice-Chair of the International Sub-Committee for Operation Giving Back of the American College of Surgeons and Chair of the Injury Control and Violence Prevention Committee for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST).

  Beyond medicine, Joe serves as a Board Director for the Brady Campaign and recently was selected as one of the 2019 Presidential Leadership Scholars.

• Rita Furlow, JD Maine Children's Alliance
  

  Rita Furlow is an attorney and serves as the senior policy analyst at the Maine Children’s Alliance. Rita works closely with state leaders to help make young children a top priority for policy makers. Her legislative and policy experience includes working in a congressional office, in the Maine House of Representatives, the Virginia State Senate, and as Special Assistant to Maine’s Attorney General. Following her graduation from law school, she focused on special education and disability law and advocated for children in private practice and as the Executive Director of a nonprofit advocacy group. Rita has a BA from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia and a JD from Vermont Law School.

• Nico Bocour, JD Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence
  

  Nico Bocour is the State Legislative Director for Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly. Prior to joining Giffords, she was a government affairs consultant and policy director in New Jersey working to prevent gun violence in the Garden State. Nico is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT and holds her JD from Seton Hall Law School in Newark, NJ.

• Rebecca Bell, MD University of Vermont Medical Center & Vermont AAP
  

  Dr. Bell is a Pediatric Critical Care physician at the University of Vermont Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM. She is the Pediatric Medical Director for the UVM Health Network Critical Care Transport Team and Director of PICU Quality. As the Injury Prevention Program Director at the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program, she focuses her efforts on suicide prevention, firearm safety, and promotion of infant safe sleep. She is a member of the Vermont Child Fatality Review Team and the Governor’s Task Force on Community Violence Prevention. She is currently the Vice President of the Vermont Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bell has been recognized regionally and nationally for her advocacy efforts on immunizations and firearm safety. Her current research focuses on physician counseling on firearm safe storage.

• Laura Blaisdell, MD, FAAP Intermed
  

  Dr. Blaisdell is a board certified pediatrician who focuses on providing personalized care that is evidence-based and responsive to families’ changing needs. She believes being part of life’s journey with families, children and adolescents is a tremendous honor.

  She sees patients at Intermed's Yarmouth site, conducts research with the Center for Outcome Research and Evaluation at Maine Medical Center Research Institute, and teaches at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital Pediatrics Residency Program. She received a B.A. from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, a medical doctorate and public health degree (MD/MPH) at the University of Minnesota, and completed a residency in pediatrics at Maine Medical Center in 2005.
